• Be at least 20 Years of age to be considered for the Detention Officer position (certification not needed- training provided). For the Deputy Sheriff position, must be a mandated Peace Officer in good standing.
  • Be a born or naturalized citizen of the United States with no felonies.
  • Possess a minimum of an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalence that is recognized by our agency.
  • Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License.
  • Successfully pass an extensive background investigation which includes a check of school records, criminal history (fingerprinting is required), driver’s history, credit history, prior employment history, court disposition(s) to include police reports; inquiries into character and reputation through interviews of references and previous work/school associates. (this process can take up to 4 weeks.
  • Successfully pass a Psychological, Physical and Drug Screening tests.
  • Complete a Henry County Sheriff’s Office Application and Pre-employment Background Questionnaire (must have application consent forms and page 29 of the background questionnaire notarized)).
  • Upon completion of the Background Questionnaire, applicants must provide the following documents:
    • Certified driver’s history from other states if you have held an out of state license in the past 5 years.
    • Social Security Card.
    • Original Birth or Naturalization Certificate.
    • Original certified documents for name change- marriage/divorce decree.
    • High School Diploma or State of Georgia Accredited GED. (If you lost your high school diploma, you will need to provide an official transcript). If you received a GED, you will need to include your transcript with your GED. If you paid money and took an online course to receive your Diploma or GED, you need to mention it to the investigator conducting your background investigation. You will also need to indicate it in the appropriate place when completing the questionnaire package. If you were homeschooled, you need to mention this to the investigator as well as documenting this when completing the questionnaire. All diplomas and certificates will have to be accepted by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council prior to any job offer.
    • If you have prior military service, you will need to turn in with your background package a copy of your final DD214 or DD256. There are no exceptions to this requirement. If you are currently in the reserves, you will need to turn in a letter of good standing from the commander.
    • Must have a complete address and phone number for previous employers. If the company has gone out of business, please indicate it when you list them. If the company has moved, you need to make every effort to locate a forwarding address and phone number. If you were terminated, you will need to provide a letter of Separation from that employer.
    • If you have been arrested, you will need to obtain a copy of the court disposition and the police incident report. It is to be turned in with your background package. If there is no incident report due to the time frame, you will need a statement on the agency’s letterhead indicating why there is no police report.
    • If you were ever employed in law enforcement outside of the state of Georgia please provide a letter of good standing from that states Peace Officers Standards and Training Council and a copy of your basic training certificate. You must also provide a letter of Good Standing from your previous employing agency, or a letter detailing separation if you were terminated.
